Kevin McGinn · IEP Coach

An expert on your side of the table.

I help parents of children with IEPs read the paperwork, prepare for the Committee on Special Education (CSE) meeting, and get a plan that says what their child actually needs. In New York’s Capital Region in person, anywhere by remote.

The meeting changes before it starts. When a district knows a parent has brought in someone who reads the paperwork and knows the timelines, the conversation tends to get more specific and the plan more detailed. That is not a criticism of anyone — it is what happens in any meeting where everyone knows the work will be reviewed.

For years I worked as a teacher and an administrator inside special education and therapeutic settings with high-needs students. I wrote and reviewed hundreds of IEP drafts for CSE meetings I participated in with dozens of school districts. I now use that background to coach families through the same process from their side of it.

Where most families start

Are you feeling…

  • Overwhelmed by the process?
  • Underwhelmed by the progress?
  • Unheard, unsure, or looking for help?

Parents are essential members of the team, and informed participation is the part that actually changes what a child gets. That is what I coach you to be able to do — walk in organized, know what the document says, and take part as an equal partner in your child’s education.

Services

What the work looks like

Families come to me at different points — sometimes before a first evaluation, sometimes the week before an annual review, sometimes after a decision they do not agree with.

  • Reviewing evaluations, IEPs, and related documents

  • Helping parents clarify priorities and prepare for meetings

  • Attending CSE and IEP meetings with you, or in your place

  • Coaching you to handle the next one yourself

  • Whatever else your family needs along the way

Who I work with

Capital Region families in person. Everywhere else by remote.

I primarily serve families in New York's greater Capital Region — Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga, and the districts around them. I am able to provide remote support to families anywhere in the United States.
